I t’s exactly what I was looking for Karen O told Pitchfork in 2009. Fischer-Swiss, but based in New York-fit the bill. Inspired by Sonic Youth, who has worked with artists from Gerhard Richter to Mike Kelley for their covers, Yeah Yeah Yeahs wanted to collaborate with an artist from New York City for their album art. It took just a handful of eggs to get this crisp-yet-messy photograph right, according to lead singer Karen O (whose hand is featured).

URS FISCHER’S IT’S BLITZ! BY THE YEAH YEAH YEAHS As a broader metaphor, the drowning Statue of Liberty, a revered icon of the U.S, symbolizes the imminent demise of many of the ideals upon which the nation was founded. I think global warming is an issue that is currently relevant, time-sensitive, and a symptom of the shortsightedness of the U.S. Wanting to make a political statement on climate change, the artist created a black-and-red image of the Statue of Liberty about to be submerged underwater.
